Greenfield Gardens, a community area in Portreath, has been officially opened to the public. The honour of cutting the ivy draped across the entrance was given to keen gardener George Hearn, one of the oldest residents in the village.
Portreath's oldest indigenous citizen, Capt Gordon Greenslade, gave a speech outlining the history of the site.
Villagers and invited guests, who included MP Julia Goldsworthy and Mike Eddowes, Chairman of Kerrier District Council, made their way to the Millennium Hall for refreshments and music provided by Illogan Sparnon Band.
Work costing £48,000 was carried out on the gardens last year, transforming a tired, run-down area into a beautiful park with large grassed areas, new paths, raised flower beds, disabled access and a sunken amphitheatre.
Finishing touches included a range of shrubs, and a large number of daffodils planted by children from the village school.
Portreath Improvements Committee (PIC), which provided £10,000 towards the project, has taken on a 999-year lease to look after the gardens.
The balance of the funding came from the Rural Key Fund (£28,000), and a further £10,000 from the office of the Deputy Prime Minister's Liveability Fund.
Nigel Mathews, Chairman of the Parish Council, paid tribute to the people behind the project, particularly the PIC.
He said: "We want people to use Greenfield Gardens. Mums and young children are already using it an awful lot."
Sarah Clasper, a PIC member and one of those who helped design the gardens, said: "Work is ongoing. We haven't finished yet, but it's proved to be a really good project. When we finish here we are going to turn our attention to the play area."
The Parish Council’s Regeneration Team has recently had considerable success with securing funding for
Ground work started in early February and is scheduled for completion in late March. The work is being carried out by R.H. Olds Amenity Landscapers of Roseworthy Camborne.
Planting of low maintenance ground cover and shrubs is being organised by Portreath Improvements Committee to be carried out on the 22nd April. Grass seeding will take place by the contractors as soon as the weather is suitable. The gardens should be ready for re- opening in late July.
Portreath Improvements Committee will be taking ownership by way of a 999 year lease. This will secure the Gardens for the village and ensure the maintenance of the property.
This project has been a village team effort, with the Parish Council, Regeneration Team and the Portreath Improvements Committee working together.
Funding for the project came from the Portreath Improvements Committee, Portreath Parish Council, Kerrier District Council and Objective One Rural Key Fund.
