<span style="font-weight:bold;color:green;background-color:#cfc;">July 2007<br />Greenfield Gardens, a community area in Portreath, has been officially opened to the public.The honour of cutting the ivy draped across the entrance was given to keen gardener George Hearn, one of the oldest residents in the village.<br />Portreath's oldest indigenous citizen, Capt Gordon Greenslade, gave a speech outlining the history of the site.<br />Villagers and invited guests, who included MP Julia Goldsworthy and Mike Eddowes, Chairman of Kerrier District Council, made their way to the Millennium Hall for refreshments and music provided by Illogan Sparnon Band.<br />Work costing £48,000 was carried out on the gardens last year, transforming a tired, run-down area into a beautiful park with large grassed areas, new paths, raised flower beds, disabled access and a sunken amphitheatre.<br />Finishing touches included a range of shrubs, and a large number of daffodils planted by children from the village school.<br />Portreath Improvements Committee (PIC), which provided £10,000 towards the proje</span>]]></description>

<span style="font-weight:bold;color:green;background-color:#cfc;">April 2007<br />Greenfield Gardens<br />As you will be aware from other reports in this issue, the seats and litter bins purchased by the Parish Council have now been installed in Greenfield  Gardens and the bulk of the improvements have been completed.<br />Sunnyvale Road<br />Following representations to the County Council work has now been carried out to stabilise the<br />Highway at the southern end of Sunnyvale Road where slippage had occurred. A fence has also been erected along this repaired area.<br />Beach Road<br />Preliminary plans have been prepared by the County Council for a new kerb line along Beach Road which will slightly narrow the width of this road but delineated parking areas will be retained.<br />It is also proposed that an additional ‘bus shelter be provided around the area of The Square and that the existing shelter be upgraded. <span style="font-weight:bold;color:green;background-color:#cfc;">BOOK WEEK:  PUPILS DRUM UP PLENTY OF SUPPORT<br />09:00  -  08 March 2007<br />They know how to drum up interest in books at Portreath School - they hold a mass drumming workshop.The school staged a variety of events to mark book week, beginning with a visit by a theatre group.<br />Workshops were held for every class, culminating in a whole school production.<br />A visit on Tuesday by children's author Angie Butler was followed on Wednesday by Totnes-based Drum Crazy.<br />They worked with every class, with all the children coming together at the end of the day for a mass drumming session.<br />The week finished with a fancy dress day featuring characters from Roald Dahl books.</span><br />TOURIST AREAS SHOULD BACK BILINGUAL SIGNS<br />09:00  -  08 March 2007<br />]]></description>

Surely tourist areas like Helston and Porthleven would be pleased to see efforts to use Cornwall's culture to promote and educate both tourist and resident alike.<br />In support of Mr R Chubb's letter on the history of local streets I can state that I have been pleasantly surprised with the support and encouragement of many of my constituents. Many streets are being named for the first time using historical research and local knowledge, correcting corrupted words for example.<br />The voters of Kerrier have elected three Cornish speaking district councillors, so there is no problem in ensuring accuracy on Cornish usage.<br />Negative comments by anti-Cornish councillors who speak without knowing the facts helps no one, but divides communities. CHANGES TO BEACH DOG BANS MOOTED<br /><span style="color:red;background-color:#fcc;">09:00  -  22 February 2007</span><br />Plans to remove dog bans on certain beaches may be scrapped if there is a massive public outcry.Kerrier District Council is now consulting on the issue after concerns over the changes in locations such as Mullion.<br />The council is proposing to move from the existing ban on dogs on beaches, under the Cornwall County Council Act, to dog control orders under the Clean Neighbourhoods and Environment Act.<br />]]></description>

<span style="font-weight:bold;color:green;background-color:#cfc;">CHANGES TO BEACH DOG BANS MOOTED<br />09:00  -  22 February 2007<br />Plans to remove dog bans on certain beaches may be scrapped if there is a massive public outcry.Kerrier District Council is now consulting on the issue after concerns over the changes in locations such as Mullion.<br />The council is proposing to move from the existing ban on dogs on beaches, under the Cornwall County Council Act, to dog control orders under the Clean Neighbourhoods and Environment Act.<br />The dog control order offers the council the ability to issue a fixed penalty notice to offenders as an alternative to court proceedings.<br />The term of the ban will remain the same, running from Easter Day to October 1.<br />But the beaches affected by dog bans may alter, subject to the representations received from members of the public.<br />The council is encouraging people to write to them with their views now, whether they are for or against the banning of dogs on beaches, as once in place the dog control orders will not necessarily be f</span>]]></description>

As far as I am aware, because the signs in question are due for replacement, placing a bilingual version of the sign costs no extra money.<span style="color:red;background-color:#fcc;"><br />This</span><span style="font-weight:bold;color:green;background-color:#cfc;">      This</span> is because of the way in which the signs are made. Kerrier Council does not pay on a 'per letter' basis, which is not the case for all Cornish district councils. I might add that my own time and travelling expense for attending meetings of the advisory panel is given free of charge.
